NEW DELHI: Three Nigerian nationals have been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police for allegedly duping people by giving them false offers of lottery prizes. The police claim to have seized forged passports, a computer, a laptop and mobile phones from them. The police recently received a complaint from a woman alleging that some persons tried to cheat her by claiming that she had won a lottery. In March, the woman received a call from a person who claimed that he was calling from the United Kingdom High Commission. The caller told her that she was a Microsoft Promotion winner. She received a similar message on her mobile phone. The caller made her reveal her personal details including e-mail address. She later received a “winning notification” through e-mail. The woman was then told that she would get the prize amount only when she deposits 490 pounds (Rs.40,000) in a bank account. Suspecting that something was amiss, she contacted the High Commission and found that the caller was a fraud. The culprits again contacted the woman asking her to pay Rs.15,000. When she refused to pay up, they started threatening her with dire consequences. A team led by ACP Ravi Shankar arrested two of the accused at Neb Sarai on April 11. During interrogation, they identified themselves as Saheed Alli Olayiwala and Adewale Adeniyi Isiak. The police claim to have seized two mobile phones with Mumbai numbers from Adewale. Four passports, with two bearing expired visas, were also seized from their possession. The police found that the accused were living in Delhi under fake names. Their alleged accomplice Ismail Ayodele Keyode was arrested int Tilak Nagar on April 12. The police said the mobile phone used to make threat calls to the complainant was seized from Ismail. The accused also disclosed that they cheated people through various ways.
