Party hopes to cash in on popularity of Challakere Tippeswamy It is yet to announce candidate for Hosadurga constituency Chitradurga: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has virtually no base in the district, is striving hard to gain ground. This is perhaps why it has given ticket to new entrants in five of the six Assembly constituencies in the district. The five who have got the ticket are those who joined the BJP recently from parties such as the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular). The BJP has given ticket to G. S. Manjunath in the Chitradurga constituency. He was earlier with the Janata Dal(Secular) . The ticket to contest from Challakere has been given to Challakere Tippeswamy who was a supporter of JD(S) leader H.D. Deve Gowda. He had quit the Janata Dal(Secular) and joined the BJP. The BJP hopes to cash in on his popularity. Another JD(S) dissident N.R. Lakshmikant, who was formerly with the Congress, has now joined the BJP. He is fighting on a BJP ticket from Hiriyur. In Molakalmur taluk, the BJP has given ticket to N. Tippeswamy, who was earlier with the Congress. Chandrappa, the candidate from Holalkere, has changed his political affiliations several times. He was with the Janata Dal (United), then joined the Janata Dal(Secular) and later the Congress. He is hoping to win the election on a BJP ticket. SpeculationAlthough the BJP has not announced its candidate for the Hosadurga seat, there is speculation that the party might consider fielding Lingamurthy who has now quit the JD(S). Those who fought elections on BJP ticket in the 1999 and 2004 Assembly polls are not in the picture this time. The party is not considering giving ticket to Basavaraj Maradimath and T. S. Ramesh who won from Challakere and Holalkere respectively in 1999. Perhaps because both leaders lost the elections from the same constituencies in 2004. Those who have got the BJP ticket in the district have launched campaign in their respective constituencies.
