Water crisis grips Sankarapuram

Staff Reporter

Water not being pumped into overhead tank

Not enough funds to repair the main motor

Residents seek pipeline connecting houses at the entrance of Sankarapuram

ALANGAYM: Drinking water crisis continues to grip Sankarapuram in Natrampalli block, much to the anguish of the residents.

According to the residents, the overhead tank at the entrance of the Sankarapuram panchayat was not of much help as water was not being pumped into it. The main motor often got repaired and the panchayat did not have enough funds to set it right.

The residents said that there were a total of 60 houses at the entrance of Sankarapuram, which was 30 feet away from Eckalaspuram coming under the Alangayam block. Water pipeline from Eckalaspuram passed through the interior parts of Sankarapuram. The valve, which was at the entrance of Sankarapuram, had a leak and seizing the opportunity, all 60 families of the village collected water that was going waste. The residents said that they had made several representations to the Natrampalli panchayat union to augment drinking water supply in the area, but to no avail. They alleged that the elected representatives did not show interest to address the problem.

The water fetched from the leak was being used for consumption and bathing and washing. The alternative source of water was from Eckalaspuram. But, getting water from there was tough as Eckalaspuram was also likely to face a water crisis, they said.

The residents wanted a water pipeline connecting the houses at the entrance of Sankarapuram. They also wanted the existing pond to be desilted. They threatened to stage a protest if the problem was not immediately addressed.
