Short-term kuruvai on 10,000 hectares

Special Correspondent

NAGAPATTINAM: The short-term kuruvai paddy crop is likely to be raised on 10,000 hectares much earlier this year in the district, against the normal area of 25,000 hectares.

Farmers in the Cauvery command areas of Kuttalam, Mayiladuturai, Vaitheeswarankovil, Sirkazhi and Sembanarkovil have started raising nurseries for the early kuruvai crop, tapping the substantial quantum of groundwater through pumpsets and borewells. They will start harvesting from September and complete the exercise before the northeast monsoon in October and November.

Farmers in the Vennar division, who depend mostly on surface irrigation, will start raising kuruvai nurseries only after water release from the Mettur dam. Nearly 15,000 hectares will be covered by the normal kuruvai crop in the Kilvelur, Nagapattinam, Thalainayar and Vedaranyam blocks.
