This Day That Age
President Rajendra Prasad, who distributed the State awards for films on April 16, expressed the view that the abiding criterion for judging the excellence of the films was “the degree of harmonisation between the didactic and the recreational aspects of the theme presented.” He added: “The emotional and the intellectual elements must be harmoniously blended so as to present a perfect synthesis between the sensuous and the spiritual, or in other words, between recreation and instruction." It could be commended as an ideal which all producers and directors might well strive to achieve. Dealing with the function of films and their actual effect on society, Dr. Rajendra Prasad said while he could not say how far the impression that the student community had been misguided by the cinema was correct, he felt that it could be said safely that not all films produced were suitable for impressionable minds of the young. If therefore, without dividing films into any artificial or water-tight classes, it could be realised that as in the case of other recreations the element of discretion could be used in deciding the general suitability of films for various age groups, matters could be set right.
