Sonia wished Nalini well in 2002

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Several years before Priyanka Vadra met Nalini in the Vellore Central Prison, her mother Sonia Gandhi had forgiven the convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

In 2002, in response to a communication from Nalini, Ms. Gandhi wished her well and congratulated her on completing some certificate courses.

On February 21, 2002, Saurendra K. Gupta, assistant private secretary to Ms. Gandhi, in a letter on her behalf, thanked Mohini Giri, vice-president of the Guild of Service, for apprising her of the “present status of Nalini.” Ms. Gandhi, Mr. Gupta said in the letter, “has also conveyed her congratulations to Nalini for completing the certificate courses and wishes her well.”

The letter was in response to a communication from Nalini informing Ms. Gandhi of her completing Master of Computer Applications while in prison. Ms. Nalini had also written about her completing certificate courses in Food and Nutrition and Computer Education; the Preparatory Programme in Computer Applications; and the Postgraduate Diploma in Computers.
