Seven leaders promise exciting finish

NEW DELHI: With a round to go, the presence of seven leaders promised an exciting finish to the second all-India Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee international-rating chess tournament here.

In the 10th and penultimate round on Thursday, J. Venkata Ramana, D.P. Singh and Akash Chopra won their matches to join overnight leaders Himanshu Sharma, Sudhir Kumar Sinha, P. Konguvel and Rahul Sangma in the lead at eight points. Venkata Ramana, rated lowest among the contenders at 2168, surprised 10th seed B.S. Shivanandan, D.P. Singh defeated fellow International Master Anup Deshmukh and Akash overpowered local veteran G.B. Joshi. Himanshu drew with Sinha in a top-board marathon lasting 125 moves.

Konguvel and Sangma signed peace in just 29 moves.
