NEW DELHI: A large number of Tibetan protesters took part in a parallel “Torch for Tibet” relay run from Rajghat to Jantar Mantar here on Thursday coinciding with the Olympic torch run. The relay that began with an inter-faith prayer service for peace was flagged off by former Defence Minister George Fernandes and culminated in the afternoon at Jantar Mantar, where it was greeted with traditional Tibetan dances and fervour. In a show of solidarity, former Samata Party president Jaya Jaitley, spiritual leader Swami Agnivesh and actor-activist Nafisa Ali also joined the protesters. Ms. Jaitley, who came to the venue carrying a symbolic battery-operated torch, said: “The Dalai Lama has expressed his desire to engage in peaceful dialogue with China and we think it is time that China looked at resolving the issue in a peaceful manner.” The protesters also took a pledge to ensure that the torch, which signified the freedom of Tibet and humanity, would keep burning. ‘Peaceful protest’Member of the Organising Committee of the Indian Olympic Association Nafisa Ali said: “We did not want to disrupt the Olympic torch which signifies the triumph of human endeavour. We, however, wanted to organise a peaceful protest which truthfully speaks about the human rights violation in China.” Stating that Tibetans were fighting for a home, Swami Agnivesh said India had always lived by the principles of peace and democracy. “China still has time to end this struggle peacefully by inviting the Dalai Lama for dialogue,” he said.
