Salem: An inspector belonging to the Mumbai City Police opened fire from his revolver when he and his team of officials attempted to nab a notorious car lifter here on Thursday. Police said that a team of officials from Mumbai police, led by Inspector Gaekwad, came to the city two days ago to apprehend Palanichamy (40) of Salem, against whom nearly 30 cases of car-liftings were pending, before various Mumbai courts. Assisted by Salem City Police, the Mumbai police personnel spotted him near the Salem Central Prison on Thursday evening and tried to catch him. Palanichamy started attacking the inspector, who opened one round of fire in the air, to scare him. Later, police overpowered Palanichamy after a hot chase and arrested him. Cases under Section 307 and 332 of the Indian Penal Code were registered against Palanichamy, who has been remanded to custody.
