Additional land for GH, Stanley

Special Correspondent

10 acres for Government Hospital from old Central Jail

One acre of jail land for Metro Rail Corporation

Stanley will get 10 acres of land

CHENNAI: The largest hospital in the State, the Government General Hospital (GH), and one of the oldest hospitals in the State, the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital, will be given additional space to carry out their expansion plans, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Thursday.

The 165-year-old GH, which has 2,722 beds, will get 10 acres from the old Central Jail, which is adjacent to the hospital. The jail is spread over 13.238 acres. One acre of the jail land will be given to the Metro Rail Corporation for locating its office and one acre for setting up a power sub-station to cater to Metro Rail. Stanley will get 10 acres of land adjacent to it, now owned by the PWD. The government had already sanctioned Rs.100 crore for developing facilities at the hospital.

As many as 1,500 students are trained at Stanley.

Health Department officials, who welcomed the Chief Minister’s announcement granting 10 acres each to the GH and Stanley Hospital, said the allotment followed a plea made for extra land to enhance the facilities at both hospitals.

The GH is located in about 30 acres. More than 12,000 out-patients visit the hospital every day. There are about 2,000 students at the Madras Medical College, to which the GH is attached.

Some of the expansions being planned are extra buildings for the hospitals and laboratories.

The department is in the process of drawing up a plan for upgrading infrastructure, which will then be executed by the Public Works Department, Health officials said.

With the number of patients accessing the services of the GH and the Stanley increasing over the years, the need has been felt to acquire more land and infrastructure to serve the patients better.

Both the hospitals provide 24-hour casualty, accident and emergency services, general surgery and medicine.

Currently, the GH offers a number of specialities including Nephrology, Neurology, Neuro Surgery, Oncology, Orthopaedics, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, Radiology and Urology.

The Stanley hospital sets store by its specialities of medical Gastro Enterology, Infectious Diseases, Cardio Thoracic Surgery, Leprosy and ENT.
