Gang stealing mobile phones busted

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: A gang of nine persons that used to steal mobile phones from vehicles after diverting attention of the drivers was arrested by the Humayunnagar police on Thursday.

Thirteen stolen mobile phones worth Rs. 1 lakh were seized from their possession, Humayunnagar Inspector B. Pratap Kumar said. All the members of the gang hailed from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh.

Modus operandi

They would go to crowded locations and follow slow moving vehicles. One of them would pretend as if a slow moving vehicle had hit him and raise a hue and cry. Meanwhile, his associates would steal the mobile phones from the dashboard and all of them would flee the spot, the Inspector said.

They used to come to city, check into a lodge, stay for a week, commit thefts and go back to Meerut with the booty. On a tip-off, eight members of the gang were arrested. Based on their confession, the police picked up gang leader Nadeem Saleemuddin from Ambica lodge at Afzalgunj. One kg of ganja was also seized from him.
