State urged to drop coastal corridor plan

VISAKHAPATNAM: Several fishermen organisations, people’s organisation and human rights associations participated in a dharna in front of the Collectorate here on Thursday to lodge their protest against the coastal corridor and SEZs.

The coastal corridor and the SEZs would destroy the agriculture and marine life on the Andhra coast and livelihood of lakhs of farmers, fishermen, agricultural labourers.

In addition, the pollution caused by the industries to be set up would cause a great harm to the people, Coastal Corridor Nirmana Vyatireka Porata Committee which organised the dharna said.

The dharna participants asked the Government to withdraw the GO issued to facilitate creation of Coastal Corridor and SEZs and stop acquisition of land distributed to Dalits and poor in the area in which the two projects were proposed.

Convenor of the committee K.S. Chalam and others participated.
