Southern districts neglected, says PT

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Puthiya Tamilagam president K. Krishnasamy has charged the State government with neglecting the southern districts industrially.

Talking to newsmen here on Thursday, Dr. Krishnasamy said according to the Ratinavel Pandian Commission report, the main reason for frequent communal clashes in southern districts was the absence of industries to provide employment to youth. Though the State government had announced a special economic zones at Nanguneri, it was yet to become a reality. He wanted the government to declare the Madurai-Kanyakumari stretch as an industrial belt like Chennai-Bangalore.

Though he was not for bifurcation of the State, continued neglect of southern districts would force the people to launch a movement.

Criticising the State for not filling the SC quota in various departments, Dr. Krishnasamy said that in the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission, there was not a single member belonging to the SC/ST community. There were no Vice-Chancellors belonging to the community. Protesting the government’s apathy, the party would organise demonstration in front of universities on April 24. It would also organise an agitation on April 20 urging the State to retrieve “panchami” land and restore them to the “oppressed class.”
