INS concern in Kerala over newsprint price
Kozhikode: Expressing the fear that Indian language newspapers may face closure as a consequence of the steep increase in the cost of newsprint, the Kerala unit of the Indian Newspaper Society on Thursday said the issue would be raised in both Houses of Parliament to find a “lasting solution to the grave crisis.”
“Hindustan Newsprint Limited [with its production facility at Velloor in Kerala] has increased the price by up to 40 per cent while foreign import has also come down alarmingly, threatening closure of several language dailies,” INS Kerala regional committee chairman M.P. Veerendrakumar, MP, said here after a meeting.
Imports down
Noting that against the annual requirement of 2.3 million tonnes in India, only 8,00,000 tonnes was made by HNL, he said imports, 25 per cent of which came from China, had also come down drastically. — PTI
