Former bureaucrats left in the lurch

S. Rajendran

BANGALORE: Several senior officials of the Government who obtained voluntary retirement in recent months with an ambition to enter electoral politics have been left in the lurch. They have been denied the ticket, particularly by the Congress which has come up with a new yardstick for the selection process.

With unprecedented pressure for the party ticket from over 2,800 aspirants, the Congress in its attempt to shortlist the candidates, reportedly decided against giving the ticket to officials who had recently quit service. This included at least two former senior police officials and another former official whose brother was an important Congress leader in New Delhi. The Congress had received applications for the party ticket from 42 former officials, including several tahsildars and assistant commissioners, police inspectors, deputy superintendents of police and two IPS officers.

It is now to be seen whether these officials will cross over to another political party. One of the former officials who was camping in New Delhi for several days and has been denied the ticket told The Hindu: “I now understand the difference between bureaucracy and politics. The latter is definitely a different ball game and this is an experience.” Interestingly, some of these officials had commenced their election campaign even before getting the ticket.
