City laps up European cine treats

Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: The city of Kozhikode, known for its genuine love for music and films, is in a joyous mood. The European Union Film Festival has returned to the city for the second consecutive time. The city is one of the five selected venues from India to host the EU Film Festival, the others being New Delhi, Pune, Chennai and Kolkata.

The Tagore Centenary Hall, the venue of the five-day festival here was packed from day one on Thursday. The festival, from April 17 to 21, is dedicated to the doyen of Kerala theatre movement, the late K.T. Mohammed. “We are overwhelmed by the reaction here and we are planning to make the city the permanent venue for the EU festival,” said Kerala State Chalachitra Academy (KSCA) chairman K.R. Mohanan.

The festival opened with a Polish movie, ‘I Am,’ directed by Dorota Kedzierzawska. The film, which is about an 11-year-old boy in search of his identity, is well-conceived and inspiringly portrayed. .

Finnish film ‘FC Venus,’ directed by Joona Tena, was the first movie to be screened on Friday. A romantic comedy about “the difference between men and women,” the film portrays the intricacies of human relationship, with loads of humour thrown in. ‘On the other side of the bridge,’ by Austrian director Hu Mei was also screened on Friday.

An open forum discussing ‘Can awards be considered a criterion for assessing good films’ was also held at the venue on Friday triggering serious arguments from the audience.
