DSA summer coaching camps set to begin on May 1

Emphasis to be laid on tapping native talent in rural areas


Boys and girls below 16 years can participate

Coaching in 11 disciplines at various places


VIJAYAWADA: The month-long summer coaching camps for various games and sports, an annual event conducted by the Krishna District Sports Authority (KDSA), will begin on May 1 in different mandal headquarters, towns and in city for boys and girls of below 16 years of age, according to District Sports Development Officer B. Sudhakar.

Mr. Sudhakar said on Friday that more emphasis was being laid on conducting camps in rural areas to tap native talent. “The motto of the summer camp is to unearth talent and expose potential players to competitive sports. Camps for 11 disciplines will be held at Jaggayyapet, Khambampadu, Nandigama, Nuzvid, Buddhavaram, Movva, Katuru and a few other places, where physical education teachers and senior players will don the role of coaches. In Vijayawada, IGMC Stadium will be the hub of activity, along with Makineni Basavapunnaiah Stadium at Ajit Singh Nagar,” he explained.

Coaches deputed by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) will supervise the camps to be held here.

IGMC Stadium will play host to football, gymnastics, handball, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting, yoga, boxing and judo, while the hockey camp will be held at Makineni Basavapunnaiah Stadium.

Archery and athletics will be held in the Zilla Parishad High School grounds of Jaggayyapet and Khambampadu. The basketball camp will be held in the local Zilla Parishad High School grounds at Nandigama and Nuzvid.

The following are the centres for various other games and sports in rural areas: football (Care and Share Charitable Trust, Buddhavaram), handball (ZPHS, Arugolanu, Movva), hockey (AJKOHS, Machilipatnam; and ZPHS, Mopidevi), kho kho (ZPHS, Katuru, Itavaram), kabaddi (ZPHS, Batlapenumarru; ZPHS, Avanigadda; and ZPHS, Kondapalli), table tennis (Ch. R.K. Stadium, Patamata) and volleyball (ZPHS, Movva; ZPHS, Rusthumbada; and ZPHS, Pamarru). Parents and children interested in the camps should contact the coaches at the respective centres on or before May 1 for enrolment.
