Regional centre of CIIL sought in Goa

Special Correspondent

Work related to Konkani has been entrusted to regional centre

at Pune

PANAJI: Shantaram Naik, MP, through a special mention in the Rajya Sabha on Friday urged the Union Human Resource Development Ministry to establish a Regional Centre of the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) in Goa.

Mr. Naik told The Hindu from New Delhi on Friday evening that the Minister of State for Human Resource Development Purandareshwari was sympathetic towards his demand.

In her written reply, she stated that if any proposal was received from the Goa Government for establishing such a centre, then the CIIL located at Mysore would be willing to collaborate.

However, Ms. Purandareshwari stated, “At present the CIIL, Mysore, has seven Regional Language Centres (RLCs) located at Bhubaneshwar, Pune, Patiala, Mysore, Guwahati, Solan and Lucknow. Of these, RLCs at Lucknow and Solan are exclusively for Urdu while the other five centres carry on work related to promotion and development of 20 of the scheduled languages.”

The Minister disclosed that the work related to Konkani language, which has been added to the 8th Schedule of the Constitution a few years ago, had been entrusted to the RLC at Pune which also had departments of Marathi, Sindhi and Gujarati, he said.

She said that at present there was no centre in any State exclusively for any one language (except for Urdu). As such, should a regional centre for Goa be constituted, like other centres, this centre would also have to be entrusted with promotional work of languages other than Konkani, she has said in the reply.
