Six killed in accident

BHUBANESWAR: At least six persons were killed and 20 others sustained injuries when a passenger bus overturned near Kuradhmal in Khurda district, 40 km from here in the wee hours of Friday.

Six persons died on the spot while 20 others were admitted in Khurda government hospital. When condition of three passengers became serious, they were shifted to Capital Hospital here.

Driver of passenger bus, Maa Khandeswari that was coming from Aska in Ganjam district to Bhubaneswar failed to negotiate a curve near Kuradhmal Square at about 3 am on Friday.

According to primary investigation, the driver had dozed and the bus got out of the track, Ramesh Mohanty, Superintendent of Police Khurda, said.

“Casualties could have been less, had some passengers not opted to sit on the top of roof of the bus for a comfort from sweltering. The same six persons, who were outside the bus, died on the spot after coming under the vehicle,” Mr. Mohanty said. Ironically, many seats were lying vacant inside the bus, he said.

A police team, which was returning to the headquarter town, rescued the injured persons after 15 minutes of the accident.

The victims were identified as Jahnavi Samantray, Hadu Rout, Pabitra Mohan Swain, Abdul Mazid and Prakash Chandra Panda. One person had not been identified.
