Power trading to be handled by distribution companies

Functions of procuring power would be discharged by HPPC

Chandigarh: Haryana government has transferred the rights relating to procurement of power from Haryana Power Generation Corporation to the State distribution companies including Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam with the financial year 2008-2009.

Stating this in a release issued here, a spokesman said that the power trading business would be handled by the distribution companies on a single buyer model and the functions of procuring power would be discharged by Haryana Power Purchase Centre (HPPC) under the supervision of the Steering Committee for Power Planning (SCPP).

Joint forum

The HPCC would be a joint forum created and owned by the distribution companies. With the transfer of the trading business to distribution companies the short term and long term arrangements of power would be made by the distribution companies.

It would bring more efficiency for power procurement as the distribution companies could directly access the demand of electricity, he said.

He said the SCPP would also explore opportunities of cheaper power on a long term and short term basis and sale / banking of surplus power during the lean period of the State so that the banked power is available to the State during the period when there is more of demand for it.

The first meeting of SCPP, chaired by Ashok Lavasa, Principal Secretary (Power), Haryana, was on Friday held here to discuss the demand, availability, shortfall and procurement of power in order to ensure adequate power during the summer and ensuing paddy season.

Mr. Lavasa informed that the SCPP was formed strictly keeping in view the provisions of the Electricity Act of 2003. — PTI
