Cremation: kin’s plea to police

Staff Reporter

TIRUPATTUR: Three residents of Vattnampatti in Jolarpet, Radha, Radhika and Rajesh Kumar, along with 50 cadres of the Viduthalai Chirutaikal Katchi, submitted a petition to Tirupattur Sub-Division Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Manoharan on Friday, saying that a dead body which was cremated by the police at Railway Towers area in Yelagiri Hills near Tirupattur was that of their father.

According to the police, the body was found in a decomposed state in the Railway Towers area on Wednesday. On information from Angi, a resident of the hills, the Jolarpet and the Yelagiri police could not establish the identity of the deceased. The police and the VAO took a joint decision to cremate the body.

On Friday, Radha, Radhika and Rajesh Kumar told Mr. Manoharan that the deceased was their father Raja, who had been working as a cook at a hotel in Yelagiri Hills for the last two-and-a-half years.

According to the petition, Raja had borrowed Rs. 1,000 from the owner of the hotel, Arul, on April 6. He went missing on April 7. The petition alleged that Raja could have been murdered by Arul for not returning his money. The petitioners sought action against the VAO for cremating the body without informing the relatives. The DSP said the ashes would be sent for examination .
