Mahaveer Jayanti celebrated

BANGALORE: Thousands of Jains in the city joined together to celebrate Bhagawan Mahaveer’s birth anniversary by participating in an impressive World Peace March and a Dharma Sabha under the auspices of Jain Yuva Sanghatan here on Friday.

Peace march

The peace march, attended by nearly eight thousand people, began from the Town Hall and was flagged off by Karnataka Rakshana Vedike President Narayana Gowda.

Dharma Sabha followed this peace march at the Arts College Grounds in which Veerendra Muniji, Sadhvi Swarna Lekha, Guruvananda Swamiji of Tirupathi and other Sadhvis participated.

Director-General and Inspector-General of Police K.R. Srinivasan, Additional Director-General of Police Shankar Bidari, former MLAs P.C. Mohan and Dinesh Gundu Rao, Sanghatan president Ashok Bhandari, Secretary Rajendra Munoth, vice-president Suresh Katrela and others participated in the function.

The sanghatan urged the DG & IGP to strictly enforce the High Court order banning animal sacrifices in religious places and temples in the State.

Bhakti sandhya

The celebrations ended with a “virat bhakthi sandhya” (mega devotional evening) programme wherein melodious devotional songs were rendered by Bhakti Mandals.

On the occasion, Jeevan Sanjivini, a project to help needy Jain families was launched.

For treatment of prolonged illness among members of these families, the sanghatan will bear half of the cost.

Meanwhile, Jain Charitable Hospital too celebrated the birth anniversary. Hospital Chairman S.K. Nahar inaugurated the celebration and distributed clothes, stainless steel utensils and food packets to poor people in the locality. A free diabetes check-up camp too formed the part of celebrations.
