PUDUCHERRY: The Lawspet police have decided to go in for a door-to-door awareness programme to highlight do’s and don’ts during vacation time to prevent house break-ins. “Lawspet is the main residential area where majority of burglaries occur during vacation time. A good number of residents will go on a holiday, making their houses easy targets for the burglars,” K. Veeravallaban, Circle Inspector of Lawspet Circle, told The Hindu. With a meagre strength of 11 constables to cover 75 residential colonies, the police have evolved a strategy to overcome the manpower shortage by roping in friends of police and members of residential associations to patrol and for creating awareness of the methods to prevent burglaries. “We have already conducted two rounds of liaison meeting with members of various residential associations and started distributing pamphlets that contain 29 precautionary measures,” he said. The pamphlet also carries the cell phone numbers of the Superintendent of Police (North), the Circle Inspector and three Sub-Inspectors and the landline numbers of the Lawspet police station. However, the liaison meetings also found the policemen in a ticklish situation when the residents complained of lethargy in acting on tip-off. At a meetings held on Thursday, a woman recalled an incident in which a suspect escaped the police net owing to the delay in acting on the complaint.
