TIRUNELVELI: A total of 765 functionaries of the Communist Party of India were arrested when they blocked traffic in various parts of the district on Friday.

They said the government, besides taking earnest steps to control the spiralling prices of essential commodities, should arrest the traders, who were behind the steep increase in the prices of foodgrains by hoarding them. Apart from procuring the foodgrains and edible oils, the government should sell all these products through public distribution system.

The cartel reportedly formed by the cement and steel manufacturing units should be busted and licenses of these units be cancelled. Speculative trading and online trading of essential commodities should be banned completely, they said.

Water issue

They said the State Government should immediately start take surplus water of the Tamirabharani to rain shadow regions of Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts and establish multi-product Special Economic Zone at Nanguneri.

Kodagan, Tirunelveli and Palayam channels should be provided with cement-lining to minimize water loss so that farmers could have two paddy seasons in a year.

In the protest held at Tirunelveli Junction, the police arrested 143 protestors including 13 women while 622 persons including 367 women were detained when they staged road roko at Ambasamudram, Kadayam, Kalakkad, Nanguneri, Vickramasingapuram, Sivagiri, Kadayanallur, Shencottai, Valliyoor, Tenkasi and Sankarankovil.
