What’s ahead: The River Tern Lodge of Jungle Lodges and Resorts in Chikmagalur BANGALORE: Backpackers have reason to cheer as some of the best ecotourism destinations in Karnataka could be thrown open soon. The Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR) that had only catered to the premium segment of tourists, is planning to start ecotourism camps in at least six locations in the State for budget travellers. Ganeshgudi and Koolagi in Dandeli, Anshi, Muthodi, and several other places in Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Chikmagalur and Madikeri districts are the potential spots for ecotourism ventures. Secretary of Tourism I.M. Vittalamurthy told presspersons here on Thursday that JLR has been asked to identify destinations where such eco-tourism activities could be taken up. “The low-budget facilities could be created by JLR or by the Forest Department, which already offers accommodation at a low rate,” he added. He said that JLR-A would cater to the premium segment while the JLR-B would meet the needs of the standard segment. “These ecotourism initiatives could come up in the existing properties of JLR or in a place nearby. But we have asked them to identify places on the periphery of the forests as a matter of policy. They can enter the forests for trekking and other activities,” he added. Three projectsMr. Vittalamurthy said that the Forest Department already runs camps for budget travellers in Ganeshgudi, Muthodi, Someshwara, Anshi, Kollagi and Jog Falls, which can be further harnessed. The State will implement three ecotourism projects that have been sanctioned by the Union Government. “Three projects at a cost of Rs. 10 crore are being implemented at Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada districts apart from the Western Ghats,” he added. On the occasion, he said: “JLR has grown from one property to 16 and from 20 rooms to 240, and the online reservation would be of great help to the tourists.”
