Orissa
Berhampur (Orissa): Five persons, believed to have links with Maoists, have been arrested and some arms and ammunition looted from the Nayagarh armoury recovered from them in Orissa’s Kandhamal district, police said on Friday. “We suspect they have links with the extremists as one of the seized weapons is from the armoury at Nayagarh and a cap they used is the Maoists,” Kandhamal Superintendent of Police Nikhil Kanodia said. “An investigation is on to find out if they were involved in Maoist activities, including the attack at Nayagarh,” he said. Over 400 armed Maoists raided at least four police stations and outposts in Nayagarh and Ganjam districts before looting the armoury on February 15. They killed 13 policemen. Police suspected that extremists from Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Jharkhand were involved in the incident. The militants had sneaked into the jungles near Gasma with the looted arms and ammunition. They were encircled by the Combined Security Force and a gun battle ensued. At least three police personnel were killed in the encounter. — PTI
