TIRUNELVELI: The District Science Centre here will have some more attractions such as 3D theatre and digital planetarium in future. Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, the Director-General of National Council of Science Museums, Ingit K. Mukherjee, said the NCSM, having the science centre at Tirunelveli and establishing another one at Coimbatore, would establish the 3D theatre here at a cost of Rs. 16 lakh while the digital planetarium with 75 seats would be set up on an outlay of Rs. 60 lakh. “While the 3D theatre will be ready in another 90 days, the digital planetarium will amuse the visitors from 2010 onwards,” said Mr. Mukherjee, who was here to witness the inauguration of the newly established ‘Electronics Gallery’ at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh in the District Science Centre. On the possible joint venture with private and public sector majors, he said the NSCM had established galleries with the support of Oil and Natural Gas Commission at Dehradun and with the assistance of Bharat Electronics Limited at Bangalore. He informed that the District Science Centre at Coimbatore would be ready by 2010. Curator of Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM), Bangalore, K.A. Sadhana, an expert in electronics, who has aesthetically designed and fascinatingly developed the ‘Electronics Gallery,’ said the interactive models of the new facility would teach the functions of electronic components such as diode, semiconductor, transistor and their applications in electronics and electronic gadgets. The Director of VITM, K. Vasudeva Bhatta, and District Science Officer, District Science Centre, Tirunelveli, R. Gopalakrishna, were present. In a function held later, the Mayor, Tirunelveli Corporation, A.L. Subramanian, inaugurated the ‘Electronics Gallery’ and Vice-Chancellor of Anna University – Tirunelveli, S. Kaliappan, lighted ‘kuththuvilakku.’ Addressing the meeting, Dr. Kaliappan appealed to the younger generation to carefully choose their career and make use of the scientific advancements to come up in life.
