The grand-old-man of Maharashtra, Dr. D.K. Karve, who completed 100 years on April 17, is celebrating his 101st birthday on April 18. A well-known social worker, educationist and a pioneer of women’s education, Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve started his career as Professor of Mathematics in a college in Poona. He established the Widow Re-marriage Association in 1893 and the Hindu Widows Home Association in 1895. Dr. Karve started another movement of village education and toured a number of villages for that purpose. In 1955, he was awarded Padma Vibhushan and in January, 1958, the President bestowed on him Bharat Ratna, India’s highest award. The S.N.D.T. Women’s University, which was founded by him, will ever remain a monument to his spirit of service. By his courage and self-effacement, he has truly earned the title of “Maharshi".
