News Analysis
In an article “A perspective on law reforms” (Op-Ed, April 17, 2008), the ninth paragraph was “Nehru’s historic words are apt here: ‘Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge not wholly or in full measure but very substantially. The service of India means the service of the millions who suffer, it means the ending of poverty and ignorance and decease and inequality of opportunity ….’” It should have been “disease”. The thirteenth paragraph in a report “Kayani briefs Premier, wins all-round praise” (“International” page, April 5, 2008) was “Major-General Nadeem Taj, head of ISI, was appointed by General Musharraf just before he quit as Army chief last year.” It should have been Lt. General Nadeem Taj. In a report “Panther brought to Vandalur zoo” (Chennai city, April 18, 2008, page 2), the animal is not a panther, as mentioned in the accompanying photograph, heading and text. It is a leopard. We repeat the clarification we issued on March 24, 2006. “The Arignar Anna Zoological Park, at Vandalur, clarifies that a black panther is a melanistic leopard. Mutations cause it to produce more black pigment (eumelanin) than orange-tan pigment (pheomelanin). This results in a chiefly black coat, though the spots of a black panther can still be discerned in certain light.” >The caption of a standalone picture (Andhra Pradesh editions, April 17, 2008, page 2) was “Gotcha! Hunting Ground: After some patient wait and initial struggle to hold on to its prey, a crane manages to catch a fish and gulp it down, downstream Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada on Wednesday.” The bird seen in the picture is an egret. >The caption of another standalone photograph (Andhra Pradesh editions, April 17, 2008, page 5) was “Aerial survey For a Catch: A white Ibis begins flight to find food in the surroundings of Uppalapadu Bird Sanctuary in Guntur district.” The bird seen in picture is a pelican. Sourav Ganguly is 35 years old, and not 37, as mentioned in a report “‘Losing the ODI place was shattering’” (“Sport”, April 17, 2008).
