Vasco beats Indian Bank

KOLKATA: Vasco SC scored an injury-time winner to beat Indian Bank 3-2 in the opening match of the inaugural ONGC I-League football second division’s final stage at Nehru Stadium, Guwahati on Friday.

The Goa side stole the initiative with a late comeback wherein it scored three goals in the last nine minutes to upstage the Chennai based team, which enjoyed a two-goal advantage till the 81st minute, according to information received here.

Vasco midfielder Donald Rocha set up two goals, while scoring one himself.

He helped Vasco reduce the margin with a measured centre that was headed home by Luciano Sabrosa in the 81st minute. Switching over to the scoring mode in the next instant,

Rocha availed a Jefferson Franco pass to bring up the equalizer in the 87th minute.

Vasco ensured it netted full points when substitute Joy Ferrao nodded home the winner off another Rocha cross in the fourth minute of the injury time.

Indian Bank showed good rhythm for the greater part of the action and worked up to a comfortable position with a 2-0 lead in the 72nd minute.

S. Santha Kumar got the first break as early as in the fifth minute, when scored after intercepting a misdirected pass from Vasco medio Agnelo Colaco.

The bankmen doubled the lead in the 72nd minute when M. Subhas Singh found the mark off a through-pass from S.

Parthiban. Just as Indian Bank appeared to be cruising towards a comfortable win, Vasco turned things around making a remarkable comeback.

Abandoned

The second match of the day between Mohammedan Sporting and Mumbai FC was postponed after the floodlighting in the Nehru Stadium developed a snag. — Principal Correspondent
