Gagan misses prone final by a whisker

NEW DELHI: Gagan Narang shot a 596 out of 600 but missed making the final on the count-back in the 50m free rifle prone event at the shooting World Cup in Beijing on Friday. Gagan had a series of 99, 100, 100, 98, 100 and 99, but paid for missing three points in the last 300.

There were eight shooters with 596 fighting for three places in the eight-man final, and all the three who made the cut had dropped only one point in their last 300.

In the women’s 3-position event, as Anjali Bhagwat shot a below par 566 to be placed 53rd. She had 192 in prone, 184 in standing and 190 in kneeling. Anjali had done better in the qualification phase with a 576.

Tejaswani’s best

Among the Indians, Tejaswini Sawant came up with the best performance as she had a 579. She had 194 in prone, 190 in standing and 195 in kneeling. She could have made the final with four more points.

In women’s skeet, the lone Indian entry, Arti Singh had a series of 21, 21 and 22 but a total of 64 could fetch her only the 22nd place in a field of 42 shooters.
