Venture Lighting to set up second unit

Special Correspondent

To invest $15 m in the new facility

CHENNAI: Ohio-headquartered (U.S.) Venture Lighting, a fast growing metal halide lighting company, is planning to expand its presence in India by setting up its second unit.

Venture Lighting, a part of Advanced Lighting Technologies of the U.S., entered India in 1998 by establishing a manufacturing facility at Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) here through its wholly-owned subsidiary Venture Lighting India Ltd. The facility is producing 5.5 million lamps annually. Out of which, five million are exported. The remaining is sold in the domestic market. Half the total exports go to the U.S. market, according to Sabu Krishnan, President, Venture Lighting International.

Capacity

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Mr. Krishnan said the proposed new facility with a capacity of three million lamps would be located in Tamil Nadu outside the MEPZ. Venture would invest $15 million in the new facility. The proposed facility would provide jobs to 400 people. The MEPZ facility employed around 1,500 people, he said.

Nano coating

Venture Lighting, he said, was also looking at establishing a facility to make advanced materials such as nano coating for reflectors used in table projectors. This project, he said, would come up by December this year and would provide jobs to 150 people. He estimated the investment in the venture at $12 million.

Mr. Krishnan said Venture’s global sales stood at around $270 million. Its Indian operations fetched a revenue of $110 million. He said Venture also had a 15-member research and development set-up here, which was engaged in next level fundamental research.
