NEW DELHI: J. Venkata Ramana made history of sorts by becoming one of the lowest-rated players to win an international-rated chess tournament in the country. Rated 2,148 and seeded a distant 48th in the second all-India Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee international-rated chess tournament, Ramana topped a field with several International Masters in a close finish on Friday. In the 11th and final round, Venkata Ramana defeated Sudhir Kumar Sinha to tally nine points. Akash Thakur, too, had the same number of points, but Ramana was declared the champion on the basis of better tie-break score. Ramana’s sterling performance, rated at 2,501, has earned him a whopping 64 rating points. The results: 11th round: D.P. Singh (8.5) drew with P.
