Goel BJP general secretary

Staff Reporter

Vijay Goel

NEW DELHI: Former Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party national secretary Vijay Goel has been elevated by the party to the post of all-India general secretary.

While the names of other senior party leaders too were considered for the post, Mr. Goel is understood to have got the nod because of his recent work in Haryana and Jharkhand. He was instrumental in organising a big party rally in Haryana, and in the Rajya Sabha elections from Jharkhand he had secured surplus votes for the party.

Belonging to Vaish Samaj and considered a youth leader, Mr. Goel has also been Member of the Lok Sabha from Chandni Chowk in the past. Last year he was also in the running for the post of Delhi BJP president before Dr. Harsh Vardhan got the party leadership’s nod.

Mr. Goel’s promotion is being seen by political observers here as an attempt by the BJP to win over the Vaish community in Delhi, just the way the Congress had gone about making Rajya Sabha member J. P. Agarwal president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee last year.
