Man jailed for power theft

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A special court in the Capital dealing with electricity-related cases has awarded a four-year jail term to a businessman who was caught stealing power on more than one occasion. The court also asked Master Puran Singh, a resident of Ranholla village in West Delhi, to pay Rs. 37.5 lakh as fine.

Only this past month Puran Singh was sentenced to two years’ rigorous imprisonment for stealing electricity. The second conviction comes in less than a month.

“The businessman has been caught stealing electricity seven times. Last month he was asked to undergo rigorous imprisonment for two years and fined Rs. 82 lakh,” said a BSES spokesperson.

Puran Singh, a businessman who runs a mid-sized plastic moulding factory in Ranholla village, will serve the two jail terms simultaneously.

“Earlier on January 20, 2007, a BRPL enforcement team had caught the accused stealing 102 kW of electricity by directly tapping into a nearby BSES LV mains. The stolen power was being used by the accused to run his factory. No meter was found on site. Subsequently in accordance to the provisions laid in the Electricity Act, a penalty of Rs. 75 lakh was imposed on him. Later when the accused did not pay the penalty within the stipulated time, BSES filed a case in the special court,” the spokesperson said.
