CUDDALORE: Skill upgrading training is being imparted to narikoravas through the District Industries Centre (DIC) and the Women Development Corporation in Cuddalore district.

The training is being imparted to improve their economic condition and put an end to their nomadic lifestyle by integrating them with the mainstream.

Statistics

According to statistics, 399 narikorava families, comprising 1,464 members, have settled down at 13 places in the district such as Thirupadiripuliyur, Naduveerapattu, Seerakuppam, Panikkankuppam, Lalpuram, Keerapalayam, Kumarakudi, Srimushnam, Periakurichi, Vriddhachalam, Ramanaththam, Veppur and Pennadam.

Ban

After the ban on hunting wild birds, the narikoravas started depending on stringing bead necklaces and selling needles.

On an average they earn about Rs. 40 a day. A substantial portion is often being spent on travel, sources said.

The district administration has identified those in the 15-60 age group for developing their skills in the trade.

The DIC has come forward to hone their skills in the traditional trade and give them wider market access through product diversification.

The narikoravas have been encouraged to form welfare associations in their respective areas and a district-level federation.

The narikoravas are also keen on their wards pursuing education so that they could take up other professions.

A total of 545 boys and girls below 14 years of age are now initiated into basic education.

After having accommodated them in habitiations, the authorities have issued ration cards to 256 families.

The rest would be covered soon, the sources said.

Arrangements have been made for their wards to have food in the nearby noon-meal centres.

T. Ranger, president of the narikorava association at Panikkankuppam, thanked Collector Rajendra Ratnoo for providing water supply to the habitation and sanctioning Rs. 7.5 lakh for the construction of compound wall.

K.Vijayan, secretary of the association, said that if the banks extended financial assistance, the narikoravas could go for high-value items.

An exhibition of the products made by the narikoravas was conducted at St. Joseph College recently.
