Chinese engineers asked to leave

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: Over 250 Chinese engineers and managerial staff working on installation of a lignite-based thermal power plant at Guda in Bikaner district of Rajasthan have been asked to leave the station till they get clearance from the Union Home Ministry.

The Chinese team, which has been working on the plant, is now reportedly camping at the divisional headquarters in Bikaner, some 50 km from the site. Bikaner is a border district in west Rajasthan.

There are conflicting reports about the validity of the permission the Chinese engineers had as Additional District Magistrate P. C. Mavar, Bikaner (City), when contacted on phone said the permission had expired on Feb. 29.

“The site is closed now and there is no one working,” Mr. Mavar said.

However, other reports indicated that some of the Chinese engineers were working at the project, owned by V. S. Lignite Thermal Power Project, in the month of March as well. “If they want to be on the west side of the National Highway No.15, they need permit. Till they get it from the higher authorities they have been asked to stay back in Bikaner,” said the Circle Officer of Nokha police station, Adarsh Choudhary.

The matter has been referred to Delhi by the district authorities, he indicated.
