STUNNING ONSLAUGHT: Kolkata Knight Riders’ Brendon McCullum strikes powerfully during his blistering unbeaten 158 against Bangalore Royal Challengers at the inaugural Indian Premier League Twenty20 match at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore on Friday. Knight Riders won by 140 runs.

Chennai: A sensational unbeaten 158 by wicket-keeper batsman Brendon McCullum powered Kolkata Knight Riders to a comprehensive 140-run win over Bangalore Royal Challengers in the inaugural match of the Indian Premier League in Bangalore on Friday.

Replying to Knight Riders’ 222 for three, Royal Challengers was dismissed for 82 in 15.1 overs at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

McCullum, whose effort was the highest individual score in a Twenty20 game, was adjudged the Man of the Match.

The Kiwi wicket-keeper batsman blazed 13 sixes – the most in a Twenty20 contest - and ten fours in an incredible 73-ball innings on a packed arena. Opening the innings, McCullum dismissed the Bangalore team’s attack ruthlessly, driving, flicking and pulling with aplomb.

The onslaught which began in Zaheer Khan’s first over continued till the last ball of the innings, when McCullum dumped medium pacer Praveen Kumar over the long-on ropes. McCullum used his feet, picked the length of the ball early, and was decisive in his stroke-play. His was largely a one-man onslaught on the Royal Challengers bowling; the next highest score in Knight Riders’ innings was Ricky Ponting’s 20.

Chasing a daunting target, the host was jolted early by pacemen Ashok Dinda and Ishant Sharma. Ishant castled Rahul Dravid with an incoming delivery and the host could not manage a recovery.

Ajit Agarkar, who finished with three wickets, dented the middle-order. The paceman picked up the crucial wicket of Jacques Kallis as the Royal Challengers slumped further. In a telling commentary, Praveen Kumar’s 18 not out was the highest score of the innings.

Knight Riders picked up two points while Royal Challengers drew a blank.
