Manipal: Honorary Director of Manipal Institute of Communication M.V. Kamath said on Friday that a media council, with its jurisdiction on print, electronic and blogs media, be formed to look into complaints in these areas. He was speaking at the inaugural of “Manipal Media Students’ Convention 2008”, organised by the Manipal Institute of Communication, here. A “Bloggers’ meet” is being held as part of the convention. Mr. Kamath said that the media council should be a private self-regulatory body. It should be able to act on the complaints and punish the guilty. He said the relationship between blog medium and journalism had assumed such an importance that Harvard University’s Nieman Foundation for Journalism had been compelled to discuss it in its report. “Can unedited blogging be trusted? Is blogging really just another or more important form of journalism?” he asked. He said that although all blogs were not news oriented, those that were so serve up analyses and opinions in a format often akin to annotative reporting. Many of them focussed on providing commentaries on news coverage in the mainstream, he added. Vice Chancellor of Manipal University Rajasekharan Warrier and director of the institute Buroshiva Dasgupta were present.
