Close watch will be kept on mischief mongers

A bandobust scheme with focus on crime prevention and crowd control is in place, reports

Chithirai festival hardly goes without complaints of chain-snatching, bag lifting and pick-pocketing. Even as the police deploy hundreds of police personnel, including a large number of women police, habitual offenders manage to relieve devotees, usually women, of their jewellery or other valuables, taking advantage of the milling crowd.

This year, the city police have chalked out a meticulously planned bandobust scheme that lays special focus on crime prevention and crowd management.

Thousands of police personnel have been deployed on Chithirai festival security.

Inspector General and Commissioner of Police K. Nandabalan has instructed the police to ensure that the festival goes incident-free by keeping mischief mongers at bay.

“The entire proceedings of the celestial wedding, Lord Kallazhagar entering the Vaigai river and related events are closely monitored with surveillance cameras. We have also deployed spotter police constables attached to the crime wing to check the movement of habitual offenders. Plainclothesmen have been posted at vulnerable points,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), R. Ramrajan, said.

A thorough search was being conducted in lodges and houses located on the city outskirts.

“Since a few events such as ‘poo pallakku’ are held late in the evening, we have intensified patrolling in residential areas. Intelligence sharing is being done with the district Special Branch.”

Devotees were being educated not to leave their baggage unattended and be conscious of strangers getting closer to them.

“Special teams have been positioned at vantage points to counter emergency situations,” Mr. Ramrajan added.
