Basavanna’s life in colour

Staff Correspondent

Painter’s space: An artist giving the final touches to his work at the camp in Dharwad on Saturday.

DHARWAD: The 12th century social revolution initiated by Basavanna was responsible for bringing about a social transformation in the State. Even today, the followers of Basavanna try to spread his message of building a casteless society.

There are scores of books about Basavanna, his life and his ideology, which are mostly presented through his vachanas in the local language.

The “Bellad shikshana mattu krishin pratishthana” (Bellad education and agricultural foundation) has, for the third time, organised an art camp on Basavanna to spread his message through the pictorial medium.

What was an integral part of Basavanna’s life was getting rid of “janivaara”; his tenure as minister in King Bijjala’s court and his social revolution; inter-caste marriages; dasoha (mass feeding) to sharanas; Akkamahadevi’s interaction with Allamaprabhu at Anubhav Mantap; the concept of Anubhav Mantap; and the “kalyana kranti”. All such incidents have been presented through paintings by twelve noted artists at the Srujana Auditorium on Karnataka College Campus, Dharwad. On Saturday, the last day of the Basava Art Camp, the artists were busy giving the final touches to their paintings.

Several enthusiasts have visited the venue of the camp in the last five days and viewed the paintings as they progressed. On Saturday, there were many visitors to see the almost-finished paintings.

The national-level Basava Art Camp will conclude with a valedictory ceremony at Dr. Mallikarjun Mansur Kalabhavan in Dharwad on Sunday.
