New policy envisages increase in the wages in tune with the rising costs Field assistants provided facilities at par with the government employees HYDERABAD: The State government has decided to come out with a comprehensive human resources policy for addressing wage related issues and providing other facilities to the field staff of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). The new policy envisages increase in the wages in tune with the rising costs and the field staff including field assistants, technical assistants, computer operators and additional project officers would be provided facilities at par with the government employees. The proposals include extension of leave benefit, maternal and paternal leave in particular, implementation of the employees’ provident fund scheme and providing life, medical and accidental insurance cover to all the field staff. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Rural Development Minister G. Chinna Reddy said an announcement on the policy would be made after obtaining a clarification from the Election Commission of India in view of the election code of conduct in force. There were 21,000 field assistants, 3,033 technical assistants, 2,000 computer operators and 1,090 additional programme officers presently engaged in the NREGS on contract basis. Admitting that the Government was able to provide only 42 working days against the 100 stipulated under the scheme, he said there were five lakh families that secured 100 days work and it was decided to increase the number to 22 lakh families during the current year.
