MOSCOW: Amid efforts to secure international support in its quest for conducting nuclear commerce, India reached out to the Nordic nations, who are members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), to boost bilateral cooperation. National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan held a rare meeting with the Foreign Ministers of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland in Stockholm to apprise them of India’s increasing role as a global player. Mr. Narayanan’s participation in a biannual meeting of the Foreign Ministers in Stockholm earlier this week assumes significance as it is quite rare that an official from a country outside the region is invited to such a gathering. The Nordic countries had in the past voiced reservations about lifting the curbs on India from conducting nuclear commerce and their support is key to New Delhi getting a waiver from the NSG. Mr. Narayanan also had one-to-one talks with Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and reviewed relations. — PTI
