Kitajima issues an Olympic warning
TOKYO: Athens Olympic dual gold medallist Kosuke Kitajima issued a Beijing warning by setting a new national record on Saturday to qualify for the Olympics.
The 25-year-old from Tokyo clocked two minutes 08.84 seconds to win his second straight and sixth overall men’s 200-metre breaststroke title at the national championships, the fastest time in the world in the past four years.
Yuta Suenaga finished second to qualify for the Olympics in 2:10.17, ahead of Ryo Tateishi at third in 2:10.33.
“I knew I was faster than the world record pace at the 150-metre point. I needed to do a little bit more effort to break it,” said Kitajima.
“It will be a competition of standings rather than a record in the Beijing Olympics. Hopefully, I can put up the Japanese flag on the centre pole. This victory gave me a lot of momentum,” he added.
