Congress announces first list

Bangalore: The Congress late on Saturday announced the list of candidates for 84 of the 89 Assembly constituencies that go to the polls in the first phase on May 10.

Among the candidates in the first list are 20 former Ministers, including most of those who left the Janata Dal (Secular) to join the Congress. All the former JD(S) Ministers and legislators joined the Congress either along with the former Deputy Chief Ministers Siddaramaiah or M.P. Prakash.

Contrary to expectations, the name of the former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna, who was expected to contest from Maddur, does not figure in the list. Mr. Siddaramaiah will contest from the newly carved out Varuna constituency in Mysore.

The party has not announced a candidate for the prestigious Ramanagara constituency. The former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy is expected to contest from there. The other constituencies for which candidates have not been announced are Chikkanayakanahalli, Chickpet, Tumkur Rural and Vijayanagar.

The Screening Committee headed by the former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Digvijay Singh is reported to have heard the Karnataka Congress leaders again on Saturday before making certain changes to the list. It was then submitted to AICC president Sonia Gandhi. Despite the pressure exerted on the committee, the decision not to nominate relatives of senior leaders, those who quit government service in the recent past to get into electoral politics and those who were defeated in two consecutive elections has not changed.
