Police team carrying on its own campaign

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: To avoid poll-related violence and ensure peaceful polling, the West Division Police have embarked on a novel campaign. Deputy Commissioner of Police P. Harishekaran and a posse of other senior officers have been visiting the residences of those with criminal antecedents.

During their visit, the officers apprise their families of the past of the anti-social element and counsel them about the consequences of such activities. Mr. Harishekaran told The Hindu that they have urged families to pressure the accused against participating in any unlawful activity. At least five gangs are present in the West Division. Mr. Hariharan has visited 50 houses and delivered a tough message. “Instead of fighting the violence when it erupts, I feel this will act as a deterrent,” Mr. Harishekaran said. The police have booked 60 ‘security cases’ under Section 101 where a classified rowdy will have to execute a bond for good behaviour.
