Clashes at Nandigram
Special Correspondent
Kolkata: With the panchayat polls in West Bengal closing in, the scene at Nandigram in East Midnapore heated up once again following clashes on Saturday between supporters of the CPI(M) and the anti-land acquisition body, the Bhoomi Uchched Pratirodh Commiittee (BUPC).
Amid reports of eight BUPC members getting injured in the clash at Bhangabera and gang rape of two women at Garchakrabera on Friday, tension prevailed in the area. Senior police officials rushed to the spot to control the situation.
Each group levelled charges of ransacking and looting houses against the other.
The incidents created ripples here as one of the gang rape victims was moved to the the SSKM hospital for treatment.
Road blockade
Congress leader Subrata Mukherjee visited the hospital along with his followers as did Trinamool Congress supporters who also mounted a 10-minute road blockade near the hospital. Later they mached inside the hospital and raised slogans.
