Entrance exam put off amid fear of paper leak

Special Correspondent

Kolkata: The joint entrance examination for admission to engineering and medical colleges in West Bengal, scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed amid reports of paper leak. Two persons were detained for interrogation.

Nearly one lakh students were slated to take the examination, billed as one of the toughest tests in the country, in 193 centres in the State.

The postponement decision was taken by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board. Fresh dates would be announced only after a meeting of the board and the Education Department next week, it is learnt. An inquiry would be conducted by the CID. Board chairman Siddharta Dutta said the leak could be detected only due to the stringent security measures and policing.

The incident, first such in the history of the JEE, was detected on Friday night when there were reports of some question papers being sold in Kharagpur.

Copies of the papers were procured and were found to be photocopies of draft question papers which were prepared and were very close to the ones that were to be given to the examinees on Sunday.

The printing press, which has been entrusted with the job for the last 30 years, is among the suspects.
