This Day That Age
Prof. Jean Philippe Vogel, a Dutch scholar and renowned archaeologist, died on April 10, in Holland. He was 88. He took his Doctorate in 1897 at the University of Amsterdam, his thesis being a Dutch translation of Sudraka’s Mrichchakatika, a well-known drama in classical Sanskrit. In 1901, he joined the Archaeological Survey of India and worked in close association with Sir John Marshall till 1912, when he went home on leave. In 1914, he was appointed Professor of Sanskrit and Indian Archaeology at the State University of Leyden, which post he held till 1939.
