J&K Sikh devotees seek repairs to bridge

Srinagar: A large number of Sikh devotees on Sunday staged a protest near a gurdwara in Uri disrict of Jammu and Kashmir, demanding immediate repairs to a bridge to make their pilgrimage safe.

The bridge, built in 1952, was unsafe and they faced considerable difficulty in reaching the place of worship, the devotees said.

The bridge is the only link between Chatipadshai area and border towns Uri.

Walking on the bridge was a big risk as it might collapse anytime, a devotee said.

Police had a tough time in controlling the worshippers.

They were allowed to cross the bridge only in small groups on Sunday.

The pilgrims said they had appealed to the government to undertake repairs to the bridge but nothing had been done.

“We are expecting district officials to visit the place, and have planned a peaceful demonstration in support of our demand for rebuilding the bridge,” a devotee said. — PTI
